The Hidden Health Benefits of Volunteering for You!
Beyond the positive impact you’ll have on others, volunteering offers a surprising array of benefits for your own health and wellbeing. Research consistently shows that giving your time can significantly enhance your quality of life:
- Boosted Mental Wellbeing: Volunteers often report reduced feelings of depression and anxiety, higher self-esteem, greater life satisfaction, and increased happiness. It provides a sense of purpose and meaning, which can counteract the effects of stress and isolation.
- Improved Physical Health: Depending on the role, volunteering can keep you physically active. Studies have linked regular volunteer work to better physical health, including reduced stress, increased physical activity, and even lower blood pressure and healthier cholesterol levels. Some research suggests volunteers may even have lower mortality rates.
- Enhanced Social Connections: Volunteering is an excellent way to combat loneliness and build new friendships. It connects you with people who share common interests, strengthens your social network, and fosters a sense of belonging.
- Reduced Stress: The act of helping others releases “feel-good” hormones like dopamine, which can significantly lower stress and promote relaxation.
- Increased Confidence: Contributing to a worthwhile cause and learning new skills can boost your self-confidence and give you a sense of accomplishment.
- Cognitive Stimulation: Engaging in volunteer activities can keep your mind active and stimulated, which is beneficial for overall cognitive health.
What Kind of Volunteers Are We Looking For?
We’re always looking for enthusiastic individuals who are keen to support our mission. While we primarily rely on Wellbeing Walk Leaders, there are also other ways you can contribute.
Our Core Volunteer Role: Wellbeing Walk Leaders (Local & Global)
Wellbeing Walk Leaders are the backbone of our walks. If you have a passion for walking, a friendly demeanor, and enjoy helping others, this role is perfect for you.
- In Wellingborough: For our local walks, you’ll join our existing team, helping to lead enjoyable and safe group walks, catering to different abilities. As a certified Wellbeing Walk Leader (training often provided by local councils like North Northamptonshire Council, similar to how James was certified), you would welcome new members, encourage conversation, and foster a positive group atmosphere.
- Anywhere in the World: We’re passionate about seeing the Wellbeing Walkers community grow far beyond Wellingborough! We encourage volunteers from any location to join us and start and run their own Wellbeing Walks wherever they are. You’ll become a crucial part of spreading the benefits of walking and fostering local walking communities globally. While formal local accreditation (like the North Northamptonshire Council certification) would be specific to your region, we can provide guidance and resources to help you establish and promote your own local Wellbeing Walks group, becoming an ambassador for our mission in your area.
Other Ways You Can Help (Skills-based opportunities)
Do you have other skills that could benefit our club, whether locally or remotely? We’re open to exploring various forms of support, such as:
- Administrative Support: Helping with membership queries, record-keeping, or communication.
- Marketing & Outreach: Assisting with promoting our walks and attracting new members, both for our main club and for new local initiatives.
- Event Support: Helping to organise special walks or social events.
- Photography/Videography: Capturing the joy of our walks to share with our community.
